NEW: Birmingham Landscape Practice New Draft Designs for Acocks Green Centre

On 21 March 2009 the plans on the links below were viewed in Acocks Green Library by invited members of the local community. These plans were drawn up by Birmingham Landscape Practice in conjunction with Birmingham Planning and Regeneration Department and Birmingham Transportation Strategy Department. The reason for the plans is that Acocks Green Centre is clearly out of date. The Green itself is still attractive, but the rest is poorly laid out and difficult for pedestrians, and traders, because of severance problems, and with limited parking facilitites.

The first plan shows an improved layout for The Warwick Road, with removal of service roads and central reservation, reduction of road width to slow traffic, parking bays and trees.

The other three Plans, A, B, and C show three different suggestions for ‘The Green’ (ie traffic island) at Acocks Green. Each plan is shown twice, once in colour/ illustration, form and the second time in line drawing/diagram form. Plan A shows a reduced size round island. This was the least popular plan in the March viewings. The second and third Plans, Plan B and C (Remember when going through that each plan is shown twice, once in coloured and once in diagram format.) both show an enlarged Green made by linking the existing green island (‘The Green’) and the car park island together. The new, larger, space would have trees, flowerbeds and a limited amount of vehicle parking space. It would also function as a public space on special occasions and, occasionally Shirley Road would be partly blocked off to allow for public events. (Comments at Acocks Green carnival, when these plans were viewed there included that this would be a good idea because this is already sometimes done in Moseley centre. Commentators felt that this worked well.)

Of the ‘B’ and ‘C’ plans ‘B’ was most popular on 21 March, because it allowed for a larger public area, linked in to the more ‘civic’ space of Acocks Green around Acocks Green Library and The Inn on the Green. The latter would then be able to live up to its name!

At present we understand that 3D models of these plans are being made by Birmingham Landscape Practice and these will be available for viewings by the general public in the early Autumn.
