Hi there, In response to “did you receive a leaflet on the Warwick Road enhancements” I can confirm that my family did not. And rather interesting I live on the Warwick Road itself, in Tyseley!!! I will ask around my neighbours to see if they did.

    Hi Amanda

Thanks for this. Again we will pass to the Project Team …

    Hi Val

Sorry, I have been dealing with a few comments on more than one website, and I seem to have missed this one, which I have only just picked up.

I don’t think we need to move people out of Acocks Green! I think the point I was trying to make was that people respond to their surroundings – that has been the experience of other areas. If it looks as though the area is already uncared for then some of the people who live there are less likely to care for it themselves. Better presented areas tend to get better respect from the residents.

One of the things we do have in Acocks Green, though, is a now a lot of people, in various groups, who are very concerned about the area and who want to conserve the good and do something about the rest. There have been some very well attended events, and good participation in recent debates (Like the one about the proposed A41/Warwick Road enhancements, whose leaflet you have – sort of – chosen to comment on here. I think these are positive signs.

Again, Shared Space is so much NOT just about taking the pavements away overnight and hoping for the best!!!! It is about a completely different approach to urban design. I am not going to try and repeat all of that here, but this is set out in various sections of the website.

I am sure you did do a lot of reading on the internet, but Shared Space is a complex subject, and, unfortunately, at the moment, some of those shouting the loudest in their objections to Shared Space do not really seem to have grasped all the principles – hence your being left with the impression that Shared Space is about taking all the pavements away overnight, no doubt

Shared Space does NOT require all people using the area to make eye contact with drivers, and I don’t think any one advocating Shared Space is now suggesting that this is so. I thought we had moved on from the debate about eye contact some time ago. Nor, as far as I know, are any Shared Space advocates suggesting that visually impaired people should only visit a Shared Space area accompanied by a seeing person. Very good safety statistics have been achieved in areas like Drachten where measures to take account of the needs of visually impaired people have been put into effect.

I AM aware that there is a debate around this, and a move to argue that the devices used for visually impaired people are insufficient. I am not convinced. I will be publishing a paper of my own on this website in a while.

I would also point out that the Warwick Road enhancements project, which you have attached your comment to, is not, necessarily, concerned with Shared Space. Acocks Green Focus Group are currently supporting a variety of projects.

    Best wishes

    Julia
