Welcome to Acocks Green Focus Group’s Website

Spring flowers brighten up The Green - April 2012

STOP PRESS: Yes, we do have the result for May 3 elections.  Please scroll down to top of next post.

STOP PRESS: 26 April 2012: Morrison’s supermarket application: Shaftmoor Lane,  approved 7 to 5.  Asda/Tyseley ‘Regen.’ application approved unanimously.  More comment later, but a sad day for Acocks Green, we feel.

Welcome to the Website of Acocks Green Focus Group.  We are an active local campaign group in Acocks Green.   We campaign for the fixed physical environment of Acocks Green: both to conserve what is good, and to improve what is not so good.  Our concerns are buildings, trees, street layout and street furniture and green open spaces.    Our  site is regularly updated, below, with new posts of ongoing news and campaigns.   Along the right hand side you will also find some permanent pages about issues of local interest and a set of links to other local websites and to national websites of relevance to our work.

It may be that a particular search term brought you here and you started with the posting with that term in it.  If you live in Acocks Green you will probably find other items to interest you here as well.   Have particular things you are interested in, and no time to look through everything?  Try our search box, top right.

Right now we have several campaigns going on.  There is continuing concern about the flood of supermarket applications for near Acocks Green.  Will too many ‘out of town’ supermarkets kill our centre?   We note that, at the moment,  many people are looking us up to find out what is happening about the Morrison’s appliation for Shaftmoor Lane. Thursday 26 April is the Committee date, when this plan, and also the one for Asda/Helical Retail in Reddings Lane Tyseley, will be considered.  We are interested to note that our petition against Morrison’s achieved more than double the signatures of a pro Morrison’s petition. We are backing the speaker against Morrison’s at this meeting.  (Note, anyone may attend, but, now, only this already registered to speak may do so:  Committee Rooms 3 and 4, Council House, 11. a.m.)

We are watching with interest the result of a new bid for funds for the ‘Smart Route’ work on the Warwick Road, in Acocks Green; a decision will be made this July, and we hope to have further involvements in the discussions about exactly how the Warwick Road will be redesigned, but for current proposals  for The Warwick Road through Acocks Green see our last posts on The Smart Route (The handy search box on the top right saves time!.)

Meantime our DIY Conservation Area work urgently continues.  What will be the future of 1073 Warwick Road (The Churchill Club/The Knoll?) No-one yet knows …  and what of our much loved, characterful 1909 Police Station?  (See our recent posting below.
